President’s Message

A Word from Our President

A Message from
DG25 Leadership

DG25 Family,

As we enter May, I want to share a personal update with you. After prayerful consideration, I have stepped down as president of DG25 due to family health challenges. This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one for this season of my family life. Serving as your president has been a blessing, and I am deeply grateful for the trust, support, and encouragement everyone has shown me.

I am pleased to share that Sister Cheryl Green, our vice president, will assume the duties of DG25 president. Cheryl has served faithfully, and I am confident she will continue to help guide our group with care, steadiness, and a heart for service. I ask that you give her the same support, prayers, and cooperation you have so generously given me.

DG25 remains in good hands because this group has never been about one person. It has always been about disciples working together — serving our members, supporting Alfred Street Baptist Church, and reaching into the community with compassion. Over the past few months, we have seen that spirit through meals served, care packages delivered, Seasoned Saints honored, and members showing up when needed.

As we move through May, I encourage each of you to stay connected, continue serving, and keep lifting one another in prayer. On May 26, DG25 will continue supporting A Wider Circle by helping deliver market bags to residents of Highland Dwellings and Additions in Southeast Washington, D.C. This is meaningful work, and I pray DG25 will continue to serve with humility, love, and faithfulness.

Thank you again for the privilege of serving. Please keep me in your prayers, as I will continue to keep DG25 in mine.

DG25 Members’ Meeting

Monthly Meeting — Wednesday, May 13

Our Monthly DG25 Meeting will be Wednesday, May 13 · 7:30–8:15 p.m. via Zoom. Please come with your ideas for creating a stronger sense of community and greater connectedness within our 300+ discipleship group. As our church has grown, so has our DG — and many members don’t know each other. We seek to change that.

Community Impact

DG25 Activity Focus

Fellowship, Service, and Spiritual Growth

Building on a clear focus for creating regular opportunities to come together in fellowship, serve others, and grow in our faith, DG25 leadership’s goal is to host one DG-level activity each quarter — giving every member a chance to stay connected and engaged. Each activity is reviewed and approved by the executive committee, along with participation request invitations extended to the full DG25 family.

Our DG-level activities are centered around three key areas: Fellowship (Social) — brunches, picnics, local outings, and our year-end celebration; Church and Community Engagement — hands-on service opportunities including ASBC ministries, local shelter support, and food/toiletries drives; and Spiritual Growth — gathering in person for worship, prayer, and encouragement.

We strongly encourage members to stay connected to the broader ministry life of Alfred Street. There are many ways to serve using your talents and time — whether through Christian Education, Church Family Life, Missions, Music & Worship Arts, Youth ministries, or other service areas.

Watch for upcoming activity announcements and sign-ups. Choose one way to engage this quarter — whether through fellowship, service, or worship — and take that step to stay connected with your DG25 family.

Community Engagement

Together We Bake — A New Opportunity

DG25 has a new opportunity to participate with Together We Bake (TWB). TWB supports women with low income who are navigating barriers to employment by equipping them with the confidence and tools needed to achieve financial independence and stability.

TWB has invited DG25 to their Spring 2026 Graduation — Thursday, June 4 · 9:30–11:00 a.m. at Old Town Community Church, 212 S. Washington St., Alexandria VA 22314. The ceremony includes a light breakfast and a program honoring the graduates. Free 2-hour parking is available on surrounding streets (Duke St. and St. Asaph St.).

Families of graduates and staff will attend, so seating may be limited. Early commitment is helpful. Reply to Linda Banton to confirm attendance or express interest in volunteer opportunities.

— Linda Banton, DG25

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” — 1 Peter 4:10

Community Engagement

DG25 Supports the Campagna Center

Discipleship Group 25 extends sincere gratitude to the Campagna Center for the opportunity to support its mission through a $500 donation. The Campagna Center provides high-quality educational and social development programs for children, youth, and adults in the Alexandria community. Its Wright to Read program pairs volunteer tutor-mentors with elementary school students to strengthen reading skills and foster a lifelong love of learning.

— Mary Stewart, Activity Coordinator

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” — 1 Peter 4:10

Thank You, DG25

Thank You for Your Generosity

Because of your giving, we were able to donate $500 in support of A Wider Circle Ward 8 Hub and Meade Memorial Episcopal Church. This gift reflects DG25 — people willing to serve, share, and stand with neighbors in need. May we continue to serve with open hands and grateful hearts.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give… for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7

In Memoriam & Legacy

New Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Tonya Camille Hucks Bradshaw

DG25 is pleased to share that a new scholarship has been established in memory of Dr. Tonya Camille Hucks Bradshaw, daughter of our DG25 member Sister Cleopatra Hucks.

The Dr. Tonya Camille Hucks Bradshaw Health Care Scholarship honors Dr. Tonya’s lifelong commitment to education, equity, service, and community care. Dr. Tonya was a respected clinical psychologist, a diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility strategist, and a strong advocate for underserved communities.

Beginning in June 2026, the scholarship will award $2,500 each year for five years (2026–2030) to one graduating high school senior pursuing a career in an allied health profession. Eligible career paths include respiratory therapy, radiologic technology, medical assisting, clinical laboratory science, mental and behavioral health, and physical or occupational therapy support roles.

The scholarship is established in collaboration with the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation and is designed to support students from underrepresented backgrounds as they prepare to serve their communities through health care.

DG25 extends warm congratulations and continued prayers to Sister Cleopatra Hucks and her family.

To God be the glory!
